Nate Thompson and I went to SXSW in March of 2009. We brought a video camera. The result was some 100-odd video clips pumped straight to YouTube.

    Why?

Well, I am of the school of thought that whenever people take footage of conferences, they leave out the parts that really matter — you know — the walking for hours on end, the being hopelessly lost, the size of the rooms and all the travel fun inbetween. The story is only partially told through the scripted events, what I think is really fascinating is all the unscripted bits.

Considering this is probably the most video I have ever shot in my entire life, I think it turned out really well. So well, in fact, that I think I might carry my camera around and film events obnoxiously for at least the next few months.

Watch the first “webisode” and click through to the channel to see the rest.

6/1/09 – The SXSW story might be becoming a book, stay tuned.

Wired Causes is a project I absolutely wish I had more time to pursue. The idea was/is to find people helping society using the web and showcase them. The problem is that I don’t live close enough to that side of the Internet to have ready access to these people.

Take a look at the site, and if you feel compelled to help me with it drop me a line.

Not much to say about 93 Deeds at this one at this juncture except for the following: it’s taking a whole lot of time to do, I think it’s extraordinarily interesting, and it fits into my belief that the web should be a platform for people to actually do things not just talk about them.

5/7/09 – 93 Deeds has gone through about 8 different iterations so far, I think we might be circling around the correct one now. Time to write some copy and see what falls out of it.

6/1/09 – Getting back into the groove and starting to really put down some content for the 93Deeds book.

A surprisingly simple idea. I live in a town (Gainesville, FL) without a local directory service. We have tons of interesting local color and no good way of sorting through it all. Gainesville’s Best is a solution to that. It was built using my “finish it in a week and hope it works” model and so far it has turned out beautifully.

5/14/09 – Lots of good feedback so far from Gainesville’s best. Working up some new marketing material and switching into sales mode starting next week.

6/6/09 – We are currently working on consolidating just about every review on every restaurant in Gainesville to make this a real resource.

If you are in Florida you can come out next week to see me speak about monetizing web products. I am hard at work putting together something memorable. Note: memorable does not naturally imply good.

4/23/09 – Alright, alright the monetization panel went off extraordinarily well. Two down, one to go.

5/16/09 – Lesson of the month, “don’t double book yourself.” I need to be in Orlando for a SeaWorld sponsored press event on the same day I’m supposed to sit on the SEO panel (May 21st). Luckily Dana DeLapi has been kind enough to let me off the hook.

Think the apprentice but with, well, marketing and Social Media. It’s a running thought and I still need to catch up with it before doing much more.

6/6/09 – We are going to roll this into Really Great Stories as a podcast series. The logistics are still up in the air, but I’ve found the consolidating ideas is often the best way to actually get them finished.

This point is relevant not only for marketers but for product designers of all stripes. You have to be epic, you have to do the “hard thing,” that someone else can’t or won’t do.

Your products are predictable. Your insights are recycled. You don’t bring surprise with you when you enter a room.

That’s why people are ignoring you.

Which used to be fine, because you could just buy attention for your brand or your company or your sales efforts. But that half-price sale on attention is now over.

Everything that ends up with HTSAA starts somewhere. This is my way of sharing some of that.
