Electrical Engineers at the University of Washington have taken a tiny step towards fulfilling humanities secret desire to become a race of super-human cyborgs. They have designed a pair of contact lenses imprinted with an electronic circuit and LEDs. These lenses were recently tested with laboratory rabbits, and after 20 minutes of use showed no signs of ill effects.
This is a pretty big step, considering that imprinting circuits involves some pretty toxic processes, which are not usually conducive to the long term health of the relatively delicate eye.
Right now the contacts are just for show, but in the future they could be used as a component for all sort of interesting products. Imagine being able to see your driving speed without having to look down at the console, or maybe video games projected directly into your eyes.
We can only hope that this same technology will also help us track down the Replicants before it’s too late.
