Now, No.3 is something I'm really trying to get into, but I have a problem choosing the niche. It would seem that most of the ones I'm interested in (and that I can write about in my sleep) aren't real money-makers. Then the money-makers are kinda boring (like finance and hoodia pills). So I'm kinda torn between writing what I enjoy and writing what's popular.

most of the sites that go online and think they will make money will fail by year 1. unless the company knows how to advertise on the internet.
it takes several things to make up a good interent marketing campaign.
1. SEO – you need to optimize the content on your site. the text is very important for the google search engines.
2. Seo- link echange and directories, you want to get atleast 5 thousand links pointing to you ( make sure they re sites simillar to yours)

there are so many other things you need to do in order to make money online just putting up a website does not do it,

Guess that both niche & service categories could be operating in similar ways, but niche is focussing on a much narrower market. Hence the differences are in the range of the site in terms of subject & nos. of potentially interested users. Like you could have a music site – service and a hip hop site – niche.

Just read that the number of IPOs of venture funded companies have reached their lowest year since 1978. One factor blamed was the VC funds poured into web cos. like F/Book, MySpace, You Tube which have so far been disappointing in terms of monetization. Hence a lack of Wall St interest. It seems we are on the crest of a web 2.0 wave, but with 100s or 1000s of startups coming each week, the monetization problem will kick in fast, probably accellerated by the US economic downturn. So good advice, monetization may be the rock on which a lot will eventually founder.

Niche sites is were I work from. Just browsing the web gives me ideas. I have around 20 sites and will grow further this year.

There are always business models to be had, (such as web advertising) as it is so popular today. Having worked with many business owners I see them more concerned with the idea, rather than the feasibility, Once I ask them about cash flows (how are you making money) I can see their blank stare.

How is your “niche site” category distinct from “service based”?

Providing a place for people to talk about something they like, and making money from it, sounds like a service to me.
