Is the real significance of half the votes going to 'something completely different' that users in fact have little regard for all of the main current forms of advertising ? The apparent desire for a change mirrors the politics of 'people are fed up' - people have grown cynical & want better. Personally I don't know anyone who doesn't hate pop ups & display ads meet with advertising blindness. Banners seem to scarcely work at all.
I voted for text links because they can combine relevance with some endorsement, but ultimately advertisers may need to rethink their message as much as form.

That's exactly right. Display advertising, while still marginally effective, is almost exclusively about keeping a product top of mind now. Real selling, I think, especially of high ticket items will come from endorsement.

yes we do care, if we sponsor a product it's our "name" that is attached to it. it's a new world. we are going to care about what we sell. this generation has more at stake (more than our souls). a company telling me that a product will improve my life is not going to get anywhere with me, i want someone whom i trust to let me know the truth. i have less time and money to waste on blind trust.

So we become a world of brand evangelists do we? Do we start determining who to trust by who they allow to sponsor them? Do we care?

There will be the same pot of money, but more guests at the table. (btw that flashing gif ad drives me nuts)
Corporations will not take your word anymore, they will attach their own software to your content and get the results directly. There's no more "well Nielsens said 2.5 million watched the show".
Accountability is the selling point. When they attach themselves to your content you have to do the extra work to get it out there on all levels. By Twittering, blogging, commenting, linking, it will be a full time job and a new one ( maybe call it Maven)
;O) ophelia
