Very good advice.

The companies that I deal with have cut marketing spend instead of consolidating in areas which drive profit.

In my opinion organisations should focus on driving the most out of those area's. A proportional budget slash may look good on paper, but will damage the business.

I'd advise people to focus on those core areas and even increase spend. (move budget from areas that have always underperformed)

The current climate is an opportunity for product divisions to prove their worth and maybe invest in other technologies which may help these divisions grow.

For example; competition in the construction trade is fierce, but if you focus on your usp you can still attract business.

This company made good on it's environmental policy of reducing waste and created a way of not disposing surplus supply at landfill...this has helped win contracts.

http://www.builderscrap.com

They may only be small but they're surviving through internal investment, when competition are collapsing under their own weight from budget cuts.

As far as I think, the most important key is to focus on loyal customers. Offering them the best service and products can ensure your life in such a scenario. Remember, don't experiment.

According to the present scenario, adaptation in the world market is really a tough job. Being realistic, frugal and turtle can help up to some extent and rest depends on investors.

Marketing budget is typically slashed across board during an economic downturn like this. Expect marketing budget to worsen in times to come.

Check out the Kondratiev wave. Kondratiev was a man who mapped world economies and noticed that recessions/depressions was the best time for innovation. So I would suggest to everyone out there to get their thinking caps on, look at ways of doing things better or more economical. This is the time of opportunity - Warren Buffet
