In the example of the football player, I agree they are selling audience entertainment. But there seems to be a disconnection between how entertaining they are and how well they do in their profession. For example an average footballer who is very entertaining will get nowhere, but a boring footballer who is at the top of his game is going to succeed whatever.

'What are you selling?' Read somewhere that Nike doesn't sell shoes, they sell an image. And F/Book sells entertainment & fun, the whole point is that there isn't one. Politicians are in the business of entertainment & so is the Queen. The ad on my right as I write this isn't selling teas that bloom, it's selling nature & visual appeal. The take from this is maybe that if people enjoy your site or driving your car, you have buyers, being too useful could be in the way.
