Solar is evolving and gaining efficiency while lowering costs day by day. Its not so much a matter of if, but when solar farms will be able to produce electricity at the same cost or lower than a coal fired power plant. If we took away all govornment subsidies for the coal industry, and included the costs for envoirmental and health problems relating to pollution I think you would find that solar competes today. The biggest issue with solar is stoage as people want on demand power, and batteries are expensive and typically require maintence.
