If you have been over to Mashable today you may have noticed that they are going to be hosting the Open Web Awards. What it amounts to is a Web 2.0 Award show (it seems to be the season for that sort of thing). Surprisingly enough, I have been tapped to be one of the judges.

Open Web Awards

I would like to take a second to thank them for selecting this blog. Honestly, looking at some of the other folks who were chosen to participate I am pretty certain it was a clerical error, but who am I to argue?

From the information I have been given, almost any Web application should be able to participate. Nominations will be opening soon and like a few other of these Web 2.0 award things, there will be a live ceremony for the winners.

My hope is that this show does a bit more to highlight the real innovators in the field. Generally, these events skew strongly towards the applications developed in the Valley. Not that this is a bad thing, but it does give a very specific flavor to the kinds of products that are highlighted. With the world finally agreeing with me that tech news is growing stale, maybe we can do a little something to highlight the islands of innovation hidden away among the chaff. Then again, maybe not.

What I do suggest is that anyone out there who has been looking for an opportunity to get your product in the public eye, get ready for nominations to open. I will only be covering a limited number of categories to save my sanity, but you can bet I will be looking at web applications like crazy over the next few weeks.
