Social media is entering the "main stream" stage. There is no doubt about it anymore that if you’re not on some social channel you’re missing an opportunity. But I still think that there are a lot of people that still haven't joined in. Social networking mirrors real life networking but can be more efficient. More will come— it will be a while before the bubble pops.

That is an interesting point. Your initial user base determines the direction of your community. When the cloud of buzz blows it, it's those same early users that work to keep the "point" alive.
I agree, let's see Twitter start to evolve, the mainstream adoption that's now coming is interesting.

real estate

Death is natural and necessary, but not just. It is a random force of nature; survival is equally accidental. Each loss is an occasion to remember that survival is a gift.

real estate

Depending on the specific facts and circumstances and the timing of the early adoption election, would the sale of securities subsequent to adoption of FAS 159 that were previously classified as held-to-maturity or available-for-sale call into question management's prior assertions regarding their intent and ability to hold impaired securities until they recovered.
-------------------
johnpetersen
dating

With the multiplicity of sites, tools & apps emerging daily, it can only be the early adopters who keep them going & provide them with any kind of credence. There are too many & in reality offering so little extra to become mainstream. Maybe Social is an early adopter media which will fade. There are some who haven't grasped what Facebook or MySpace is really about - but everyone has always known what Ebay was about.

I would bet the index is pretty high.

That's why I am going to have a hard time really believing this whole Social business is anything more than an early adopters market until we start seeing more applications where the tools we create are being used for more than just talking about those same tools.

More broadly, great post Greg!

Early adoptions that fade (i.e don't go to next stage) have been around forever: it is called a fad.
In social media there is a lot of talking about the media as opposed to using the media. (It would be interesting to calculate the index of blog posts for example that are about blogging). This is a sure sign that there is a lot of information incest... which points to fads...

I'm not sure there is any real cred in being an early adopter of anything. However - early adopters tend to have a solid grasp of the original ethos and vision of new technologies which can get lost in all the buzz.

Perhaps the real role of early adopters is not just to spread the initial marketing buzz, but also to help patrol some kind of authenticity of vision, even if that is just by bitching on Twitter.
