I think you hit it dead on when you spoke about Walt Disney's marketing and branding through experience and emotion. They do an amazing job of making you feel. It is a very powerful tool that I've found hard to capture online because you lose important senses when trying to evoke experience and emotion through a webpage.

You would probably enjoy reading Neal Gabler's book, Walt Disney, The Triumph of The American Imagination. It brings you to a new level of appreciation for the talent that he had. After the movie Snow White was released, he was given three honorary degrees - One from USC, one from Yale and one from Harvard. His influence on the American culture is priceless. I often wonder who the modern day Disney is on the Internet. Would it be Mark Zurkerburg?

I realize that your point is about marketing, and not Disney World specifically, but since I'm a WDW geek, that's where my interest is. :-)

I do agree that SOME of Disney's rides are quite unremarkable. The simple spinning rides (Dumbo, Magic Carpets of Alladin) and the less themed coasters (Goofy's Barnstormer, Primeval Whirl) are certainly not remarkable. The same type of rides that you'll get in any amusement park across the world.

But seriously? Expedition Everest (before the Yeti's foundation cracked), It's a Small World (annoying, yes, but impressive all the same), Peter Pan's Flight (where else does a 2 minute ride through a kid's movie garner longer lines than the biggest thrill rides?), Toy Story Mania, Spaceship Earth? Unremarkable? I think not.

And you're right that the Magic Kingdom's rides run about an hour total, but don't forget Epcot where one of the rides IS 45 minutes long (Universe of Energy- including pre-show). Still, as you say, my husband and I don't spend $2k almost every year to go on a few rides. We go for the same feeling most of us go. To feel that the world isn't so bad after all, and to get away from the boss. Even if you took away every ride on property, I'd probably still go as often as possible- just so I could breathe.

Unless you know what to look for, its hard to put a finger on the Disney magic. It all just seems sort of Utopian, when actually it is a carefully crafted business strategy. Thanks for the insight (and sorry for commenting on such an old post, I just stumbled on to it.)
