The Internet makes strange bedfellows. With Hollywood in a huff and the Writers Guild on strike, where are the programming bosses turning to fill the void? Why the web, of course. The show that is getting the most hype is this one — Quarterlife. After taking a bit of time to explore the site, it’s a lot less of a show and more of an experience.

Quarterlife

The program is being produced for MySpace and has been put together by Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, the men responsible for “My So Called Life” and “Blood Diamond.” While this kind of over the top teen-centric drama doesn’t really interest me, I have to admit that the production quality is top notch. It’s no wonder that this show is being courted by television.

On top of the program itself, the people behind Quarterlife have built their own social network. It’s a kind of web portfolio for creatives to show off everything from their latest artwork to all the bad poetry that watching the Quarterlife vlog inspires. The concept is compelling, I am interested in seeing who will be attracted to participate in this social network. My theory is that art has a way of imitating life, and participants in service might closely resemble the Quarterlife characters themselves.

Web 2.0 Roundup

Instead of making a judgment, I want you to decide for yourself. Here is the first episode of the program, watch it and then tell me — do you think it has what it takes or would we all be better off sitting through a filler season of Survivor?
