I completely agree. Education is the very first step. If you don't get students excited, you won't have anything.

Allong the lines of #2, education, I can't overemphasize the importance of embracing local university talent to establish a high tech culture. If your firm is large enough, establish a robust internship program to create a pipeline for local talent to be exposed to your technological environment. This will help generate buzz and excitement around developing a high tech hub.

Here in Orlando, we have finally started to come together to start a real community based around creative, innovative and tech people. The association is called Doterati (http://www.doterati.com) and is a Social Community for all things Orlando to bring all of our little groups together to make one big group. It was set up as a 501(c)3 non-profit and we are getting off the ground in a big way.

That's not to mention all the cool people, companies and ideas we have floating around in our little town that I never even knew about. Looking forward to the progress.

Lots of good ideas. So many tech bloggers write assuming that the web starts & ends with Silicin Valley. Mostly so far it seems to, but point behind this post is that people shouldn't be just accepting this, they should be trying to make their own contribution.. It is a www not just a Silicon valley web.
