Nassim Taleb

Nassim Taleb has always been one of my all time favorite firebrands. For those who don’t know who he is, he is an essayist and risk specialist most well known for his book The Black Swan, which contends that most of the really important risks in finance (and in life) are high impact and nearly impossible to predict.

Nassim has been criticized for his often harsh criticism of the idea of expertise and his even harsher criticism of an entire host of experts, especially in finance. Recently, he has made a few predictions about how he sees the world changing by 2036 — which is interesting reading if only because as a person who sees much of the world as being inscrutable it’s quite a big risk to make specific predictions about it.

1. Nation-States will be replaced by City-states

2. Large, “Debt-laden” companies listed on exchanges will be gone

3. Most technologies older than 25 years will still be around

4. The world will face global pandemics, both biological and electronic in nature

5. Religion will see a revival
