I don't think it's actually about increasing the ratio o good people to bad – it's about who you choose to listen to. I think this ratio hardly ever changes at all and it takes generations for the way of thinking to change. But if you choose to notice good people more than bad ones and to rely on their opinions, your own life and attitude will change in a better way.

I completely agree. If you aren't even trying to do anything other than spew bile, your not have a conversation. You don't have to be nice online, it is silly to expect that but there are lines in the sand. It's like the old saying goes, “your freedoms extend up until the point where your fist hits my face.”

Here in Canada we have Hate Crime laws. My only complaint with them is they're not used enough. Though Loren whatshisface wouldn't have been found guilty of violating them (at least I don't think, I only made it half way through the video before I determined it was garbage) – some of the uh people (might be too kind of a way to describe them) who left comments during the Yahoo Chat would have. WOW. Excellent post with a balanced perspective. You're right…as much as we would like to believe that all of these little mini-firestorms will last or have any long-term impact, most of the time they're forgotten by next week. I agree, though…although I may not like everything someone may say, I fully respect and support their right to say it. Good stuff.

You expressed the idea about context better than I could. We need to remember that any individual item, be it a single video, or perhaps even a few frames of a video, could be looked at on its own merits alone, and not necessarily in the context in which it was originally presented. (An old example is the first part of Randy Newman's song “Short People,” ignoring the middle part.)

What's interesting is that I have had a year to consider it. I remember seeing the videos a year ago. At that point there was some reaction to it but nothing like this. In the last year, I wonder what has changed. I think we all would do well to consider that things have.
