I agree with you 100%. We refer to this condition as Inventoritis. If you fall in love with your product or idea you will ultimately fail. Even if you have a great product, it's best not rely on it as a competitive advantage.

I've been in this industry (software and hardware) for a long time. This is a great bit of advice for anyone, not just someone in charge. Even when you are creating a small piece of the major project, listening to others (while difficult) and adjusting is very important.

One additional aside, the place where this becomes difficult is when you are forging a new direction with your product, process, or even a task. When you are in uncharted territory, criticism can be good and it can be _bad_ (think of Christopher Columbus, for example).

That's it exactly. No one wants to hear that the project that they have spent so much time working on is not perfect. Unfortunately, a lot of otherwise good projects can die because of just that kind of thinking.

The main problem with taking in criticism when someone has worked long & hard on a product is precisely because they have worked so hard on it. & accepting that doing mostly means undoing & redoing.
