I spend a lot of time looking at other ideas or working on my own projects, but occasionally I like to take a few seconds out of the day to speculate on ideas that I would make if I had all the time in the world. These are concepts that I believe could change the way we use the web. If, of course, all the stars aligned in perfect order and they were touched by that bit of dumb luck that turns great ideas into successful products. I make absolutely no claim to their practicality, but this is “Web 2.0″ right — who needs practicality?
Search
The search engine that I want to see is one that learns from my mistakes. Much of my wasted search time is spent forming queries. Natural language and semantic search are one answer but I still think that the ideal way for a search engine to function is to personalize itself to individual user behavior. If every time I search for “pie” I click through on sites about the mathematic constant with a similar name, the engine should gently remind me of my misspelling and adjust my query accordingly.
This idea could be expanded such that repeated queries would lead to different results depending on how I interact with the page. The point? Search behavior is deeply personal. Instead of trying to create a one size fits all solution for broad categories of search we should individualize search agents for the user.
Social Networks
What do I think the killer app for social networks will be? It will be a network that mimics the real world. Social Networks only work when they are connected to real networks of people we are actually interested in connecting with.
I want a network that travels with me. When I am in another state, I want my social network to understand this and present me with relevant information about that place and contacts that I might actually have reason to interact with.
People want intimate Social Networks or at the very least networks that feel intimate. If you think about it, it makes sense. No one wants to live inside of a mall and if everyone in world was your Facebook friend, it wouldn’t be too useful would it?
Reputation
I want a real, working way to claim my online identity. There are plenty of aggreaters out there but none of them can give you a clear, coherent picture of who I am. I want a product that can serve as my online biography, something that people can easily reference and I can easily audit to find out what information is available about me online.
The next big step in the web’s development will occur when we finally get some fine grained control over what information is available about us online. If not control over the content itself, at least much easier tools to track our persona across the web.
Web 2.0 Roundup
This is really only the tip of the Ice Berg. There are tons of other ideas that could change the way we look at the web. What are some of yours? If you could get one web service made tomorrow what would it be?
