W3, the people behind all those wonderful web standards and a pretty good metrics system are once again releasing updates on exactly how we are consuming the web. These numbers are taken from 15 Million or so page views covering 6,171 sites. After running the numbers through the Windows calculator and making a few minor statistical inferences, I have come up with a composite picture of the “average” Internet user.
This every man represents about 4.5% of the web using public.

The conclusion? As it turns out, real web users are much less cool than we might have thought they would be. To make the differences a little more pointed, Firefox is still only being used by about 25% of the public and about .03% of people are still using the Mac PowerPC operating system.
For designers out there, this is something to keep in mind. While fiddling around on your giant flat screen, trying to optimize your new web app for Firefox 3 be sure to keep in mind that your core audience is likely to be a little behind to curve.
