Silicon valley has a critical mass of technology savvy entrepreneurs. Other parts of the country... and the world there are smaller versions of silicon valley, but Silicon Valley remains the crucial center of technology. It is still home to Apple, Oracle, Adobe, Facebook, Netflix and Google. It is still the place in the world where most of the venture capital goes. The area between San Francisco and San Jose has a smart people density that makes it possible to create world changing technologies that would be at least much harder, if not impossible elsewhere. Detroit was the center of automobile manufacturing since Ford started his Model T plant there, New York has been americas center of fashion and finance, Los Angeles and Hollywood the center of the entertainment industry all because of networking effects which require critical masses of like minded people. It looks to me like biotechnology will probably be in San Diego because the luminary of that field (the Steve Wosniak and Steve Jobs and Larry Ellison) Craig Venter has his company, Synthetic Genomics there. His employees and their cohort will form a critical mass of biotechnologist there and La Jolla and San Diego will be where Biotech Valley grows.

I would like to give you a different point of view. I am from Memphis, TN and a few million is still a bunch of money here.

The technology field is still growing so fast and it seems like the growth would not slow much regardless of where you place the innovators. I could be wrong

I'm in complete agreement with you there. There is something about innovating outside of the warm, comfortable core of technology that just seems more exciting. To each his own, I guess.

This subject has come up before, and my position has not changed. While working in the valley has it's advantages, I find the idea that you can't make things happen outside of California sort of ironic. The internet is the one industry where location is irrelevant. While it may be a much slower climb when you do it outside the valley, I believe you set yourself up for long term success better when you can stay out of the arms race.
