A word of warning for anyone who may have unlocked their iPhone, believing that they managed to get one past Apple. It looks like Mr. Jobs might be having the last laugh after all. A recent press release says in no uncertain terms that unlocked iPhones will likely fail to work after the next firmware update.
From an Apple Press Release,
Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone’s software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed. Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update, containing many new features including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (www.itunes.com), later this week. Apple strongly discourages users from installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones. Users who make unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty. The permanent inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not covered under the iPhone’s warranty.
So, how are you going to keep your iPhone from turning into a $400 brick come update day? Well, it might be time to relock it. This technique is from TUAW and I highly suggest following their advice and waiting for a more solid hack to come out in the coming days. However, if you find yourself at the edge of your seat, here it is (once again, I don’t claim that this will work).
Good luck.

1I wasn’t to aware of how big the issue was with people hacking the iPhone until one of the writers at my Highbrid Nation site did a story on it.
I’d rather wait until Apple decides to make it official. though i do admire the guys who are smart enough to hack those things.

Though the site looks interesting, I’ll stop by again.

3Interesting read. There are people who have too much time on their hands when it comes to hacking. I’m sure that after the new firmware comes out, someone will find a way to get around the update. Nice blog by the way.

4[...] It looks like the running fear that the new iPhone update would turn your $400 god-phone into a Brick weren’t that far off. Instead of giving you the running commentary, which you can find here — I’ll show you this PR disaster through the miracle of amateur photography. [...]

6Hi steve,
Interesting read, but i think the solution is pretty simple for that statement; simply don’t upgrade the firmware version.
I own a iPhone with software 1.1.1 installed, thus 1.1.3 is out and pre-installed on new phones now.
I don’t update merely because i “hacked” it, so i was able to use my phone in Denmark where i reside.
The benefits of the “hacked” version, is being able to install 3rd party applications on the iPhone, with APPTAPP repositories - see the list here:
http://www.cki-blog.com/iphone-resources-apptapp-sources.html
So for a simple solution; don’t plug in to iTunes and update firmware.

7Hacks and hackers just can’t be beaten no matter how much you try. Anyone a counter-strike player? That battle has been going on for years. Even with Valve’s inbuilt anticheat system.
