Honestly, despite what the blogosphere echo-chamber might say, 3D Mailbox is not the worst app that has ever been developed. Unfortunately for us all, there have been far more clumsily put together pieces of web software for 3D Mailbox to take that particular distinction. If you haven’t heard about 3D Mailbox, let me give you a guided tour.

3D Mailbox

Actually, it might be better if I allow this very excited announcer introduce this concept to you.

The lesson is this, from now on all your email will come in either three forms: a shirtless surfer, one of about three different buxom, pixelated super model avatars, or a very large shirtless man. Not to mention, there are sharks. Did you see the sharks?

Web 2.0 Roundup

Like I said, there have been far worse ideas on the web. If you don’t believe me, take a look at a few of these gems.

Boo.com. A fashion design retail site. The real horror story was not the site itself, but its founders. They manage to blow through $120 million in investor cash in six months. Most of that went to apartments and gifts. Unfortunately, once the site was finished it was found to be too top heavy for most people to use.

WebVan. Apparently, building an online grocery delivery network in an industry with traditionally razor-thin margins proved to be too much for this startup. Yet another page out of the Pets.com book of bad business practices.

BidForSurgery.com. eBay but for elective surgery. I don’t need to go much further than that.
