[...] I really love Steve Spalding’s example he states in his post on ‘how to invent’ about the VCR: Many millennia ago when people still owned VCRs, no one ever set the timers on them. Why? It was a pain and the value that you got from doing it wasn’t worth the hassle. [...]

Very nice and truthful article. I am myself getting sometimes stuck in those "great ideas". I feel now little better if I know the right questions I should ask myself before I will go to the next step.

Thanks!

Love your website! And love your how to lists!

Have you ever seen ListAfterList.com? There are tons of How To lists there as well... it also offers a good place to source any of these How To blogs and drive traffic to your site. Try posting a simplified version of a How To list and see what happens!

I was specifically talking about a social network for actual -pets- that I was reading about a while back (don't ask).

A social network for people who love Dogs works for the same reason a social network for new moms would, it gives a platform to post sickeningly cute pictures of your obsession.

The problem comes about when you try to push this niche to include things that don't resonate with the people you are trying to attract. The example, a social network for pets.

"social networks for pets don’t work because despite what you think Fido really doesn’t care what type of Kibble Fifi had for breakfast"

true, but people DO care about telling other people every inane detail about their dog/cat/baby/etc. and last i heard, dogster.com was reasonably successful, no?

This article is SO right. I teach a very simple project management system. It is NOT comprised of many pages of analysis and ways to communicate that no one really pays attention to. It is a ONE page project planning tool. The sophisticated audience that has tried to implement those cumbersome systems LOVE mine, because it's simple, easy to use, and most importantly, people in their organization actually USE this system once they learn it.
