The Guardian reports that AOL has finally found someone to help suck the poison out of the gaping wound left by their recent customer data privacy fiasco. Maureen Govern, who has been Chief Technology Officer since last September and two of her colleagues have been let go (the employees were fired, there is still no word as to whether Maureen merely resigned) as those primarily responsible for the AOL data leaks.

Maureen replaced former CTO John McKinley who has now been brought back in until a replacement can be found. She has a Masters of Science in Operation Research from Stanford and began her career in Bell Labs in 1978. Before joining AOL, she was CTO at Convergys Corp.

I can’t help but believe that Maureen may simply be the unlucky person who was chosen to take the fall for a more complicated miscalculation on AOL’s part. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how the public responds to this rather public gesture of culpability.
