Here is a story told in quotes that explains Google’s software development strategy. Thanks to Good Morning Silicon Valley for their article on the subject.

“I was getting lost in the sheer volume of the products that we were releasing.” –Sergey Brin (Google Co-Founder)

“The result occurred precisely because we told these incredible engineering teams to run as fast as possible to solve new problems, but then that created this other problem.”
–Eric Schmidt (Google Chief Executive)

“They created a bunch of crap that they have no idea what to do with. What a huge waste of resources.”
–Rob Enderle (Analyst)

“Is any of that crap even worth using? They seem to be paying those folks too much.”
–Eric (Of the noble race of blog commenters)

The answer is a qualified “yes”, much of it is. However, it is about time that Google took some time to evaluate exactly what it was planning to do with all of its software capital.
