A security alert for any of my users who are using Monster.com. If you receive a strange email asking for your Bank of America information it’s time to go back to rule number one of avoiding internet scams, never give your information to anyone soliciting it.

The Scam

Monster

The emails are pretty highly customized. They contain personal information collected from users when they downloaded malware filled “job seeking” software. It says that a job as a “transfer manager” is yours as long as you are willing to fill them in on the details your Bank of America account. Why a company would require your banking information to determine whether you’re job material is beyond me but when you’re looking for a job a lucrative offer can be very attractive.

Web 2.0 Roundup

This email is a part of a larger security breakdown at Monster Worldwide. Recently, the company shut down a server that was being used to steal personal information from potential job seekers. From Patrick Martin, a senior product manager for Symantec Security Response, “They’re going after people they know are looking for jobs, that gives them the hook they need to tempt people into giving their bank accounts.”

The best way to avoid scams like this is to be vigilant as to who you plan to give your information too. Generally, reputable companies do not request personal information through email. If someone needs to know your social security number before letting you have an interview, chances are good that they aren’t someone you want to be dealing with in the first place.
