Steve, you raise some good points in this post, especially regarding the use of other people as a way to find interesting content.

And if the firehose gets too overwhelming even after this, FriendFeed offers a lot of options, including filtering, searching, and using Google Reader as a front end to FriendFeed (as Sean McBride has suggested). This type of a system has met with mixed reviews.
