Cloverfield

(WARNING - Depending on how sensitive you are to these things, this post may contain spoilers. Anything that I thought was directly related to the plot will be clearly noted. Reader discretion is advised.)

One of the most anticipated movies of this year is J.J Abram’s Cloverfield. With a build up that has spanned television, blogs and even MySpace page, Cloverfield is also a New Media darling. I had a chance to see a pre-screening of the film tonight, and this is what I took away.

Synopsis

The best part of this movie was how well it was arranged. If you are expecting something out of Blair Witch, think again. Even from a first person perspective, the director manages to provide a clear exposition. You are treated to all the fire and explosions that one would expect of a “monster movie,” but it is all set within the frame of a believable storyline.

Cloverfield is not for the easily queasy. The camera work ranges from mostly benign to the absolutely nauseating. It’s like being on the Back To The Future ride at Universal, sometimes it’s hard to tell what you’re looking at between the collapsing buildings and the always “just a little too dark” atmospheric lighting. It really makes it hard to see the . . .

This is where the article ends and the clue train begins.

Minor Spoilers Beyond This Point

IF YOU READ BELOW THIS POINT, THERE MAY BE SPOILERS.

Here are a few things you may not have known about Cloverfield.

  • The monster is not Cthulu.
  • Monster may not be the most accurate word to describe what’s in the movie.
  • People are killed by “the monster” both on the street and under the street. Weird how that works, eh?
  • The Camera man has an really ironic name
  • Being bitten by “the monster” is not good for your health.
  • The movie begins somewhat before the trailer would have us believe, and this scene is one of the few day time shots.
  • I neither confirm nor deny that infection plays some part in the movie.
  • Bring a box of Kleenex, there are a few tear jerkers worked into the plot
  • Even if you could sneak a camera into the theater, unless you were quick you still probably would have only received one photo op of “the monster.”
  • Some of the major rumors that have been spread are surprisingly accurate, others are wildly inaccurate.
  • There is at least one more hint hidden somewhere else in this post

That should keep people talking until the 18th when the movie is released to the public at large. Extra credit for perceptive readers.
