These defense systems seem to be advanced, but I believe this is not the core to this problem. Protection does not deal with the big problem of safety. After all, more protection will evoke more attacks.

What short of laser mishap are you expecting? This laser is not 'blowing up' the missile, it is jamming it according to the article. It would seem to do that it would just need to be somewhat 'brighter' than the engines on the airplane itself. Yeah, I don't want to stand right behind an engine either but I find it hard to believe this laser is any more dangerous than the sound from the engines.

Arguments about the cost seem reasonable but to get all worked up over every trivial risk in life is really quite odd.

I have to assume they wouldn't test them with commercial passengers on board. What with the whole potentially killing a bunch of people thing.

I'm curious to know how many commercial airliners have been shot with missiles, to see if this is or isn't a waste of money.
