I read all but three, including Atlas Shrugged, which I found to be too tedious to finish and divorced from reason. Divorced from reality is OK, science fiction, but without reason, it's just fiction.

Fascinating, isn't it? For some reason, anyone who doesn't bow to the Randian cult is "sheeple" to those who do. The issue really is clear: whatever merits "Atlas Shrugged" might have (few, to my mind), it's simply not a science fiction novel. What little "science" is in the book is dimwitted, pure wishful thinking. And it's not really important to the book in any case.

No, simply ignored. It's just not important, save in the minds of "objectivists" and other cult followers.

Well, Animal Farm doesn't involve imagined future scientific or technological advances or major social or environmental changes, nor is there any space or time travel or life on other planets. It is an allegory about the 20th century.

I would have to say that my favorite book in this list is Ender's Game. The series is spectacular, and the Shadow books were genius.

The books I would add to this list are the Otherland Novels by Tad Williams. He tends to be a fantasy novelist however his leap into sci fi was flawless with these four books. Also the Homecomming Saga By O.S.C.

Okay, thanks for writing a list like that, however, this list is not a total sci-fi list. First of all, there are some books which cannot be called a sci-fi but politic novel (not just Animal Farm, I can also add Fahrenheit 451 to this type, because there is no sci-fi content other than the novel's timeline being in the future. A sci-fi novel must have scientific content projected in the future. Also, and more important than the first reason, there is no Stanislaw Lem on this list.

Science Fiction: Fiction
based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major
SOCIAL or ENVIRONMENTAL changes, frequently portraying space or time
travel and life on other planets.
I have not read Animal Farm, yet, but I think Dystopian fiction is more of a sub-genre of science fiction.
