Atlas Shrugged is a great book. Some people make the mistake of assuming that it could happen in the real world.

The first 1/3 is an observation of how the U.S. isn't true capitalism. The middle and last thirds are the conversion to and realization of a capitalist utopia that can only exist with the invention of an infinite supply of energy, exclusion of the lazy and a collapse of the federal government.

Above all, the novel's point is that individuals are all important and that an individual should never live off somebody else's work.

You're right though, it would be easy for a guilty capitalist to find solace in this, as it does villify altruism and those that cheat the system via government interaction.

Atlas Shrugged should not be on this or any serious list. It's the author's wish fulfillment and nothing more than junk philosophy.

Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban... set in postnuke England. Great, wonderful language as 12 year old Riddley sees the beginnings of the return of the technological past.
