Car Radio

Below are an assortment of podcasts for all of those long commutes and extended days at the office. I tried to put together a varied list (though surprise, it skews towards technology) and include a few choices you might never of heard before.

In case you are wondering, I only included podcasts that “worked” without video, so some extremely popular and superb podcasts were purposefully left off.

You Look Nice Today

You Look Nice Today is my new favorite podcast. It features Merlin Mann (43 Folders), Scott Simpson and Adam Lisagor and is billed as a podcast of Emotional Hygiene. What that amounts to is about 40 minutes of some of the funniest non-sequitars, one liners and mixed metaphors you are likely to see. If you like your comedy with a hint of geek, this is a must listen. [subscribe]

This Week In Tech

Leo Laporte and friends talk about the tech issues of the day. There are scads of tech podcasts for you to choose from but this is the one you are most likely to listen to week after week. Leo usually has an interesting panel of guests and the conversation can be a refreshing change of pace from typical technology blogs. [subscribe]

Buzz Out Loud

CNETs Podcast of indeterminate length — this clever, timely tech podcast features Molly Wood, Tom Merritt and Jason Howell. BoL is a well produced daily rundown of tech news. If you have a daily commute ahead of you, this is a great way to keep ahead of the curve. [subscribe]

Ricky Gervais Show

Ricky Gervais of The Office and and Extras hosts a podcast along with Steve Merchant and Karl Pilkington. It amounts to the three of them sitting around chatting for about 30 minutes, but in that time you can get your fix of Ricky and soak in a few more doses of his particular brand of comedy. [subscribe]

IT Conversations

The Conversation Network presents interviews and presentations from great thinkers, technologists and innovators. Most recently they have spoken to author William Gibson (Neuromancer), Tim O’Reilly and Robert Scoble. If you can’t make it out to every big tech event, this is a good place to get the highlights. Things You Can’t Say About The Internet

Cyndy Aleo-Carreira, Steven Hodson, and Duncan Riley have a new podcast where they rant about Social Media “things.” I respect all three of them as bloggers and their podcast is starting off strong. It’s hosted on TalkShoe. If you have never used the application before, this is a great reason to start. [subscribe]

Penny Arcade Podcast

The guys from the hit web comic Penny Arcade have their own Podcast. They talk about games, geeks and popular culture. If you like the comics you will like the podcast. If you haven’t been introduced to the comics yet, this is a good introduction to their sense of humor. [subscribe]

Video Games Outsiders

I used to have time to keep up with all the latest happenings in the world of games, but these days I need the readers digest version — Video Game Outsiders is exactly that. John Jakobson, Kyle Jones and Michelle Madison talk about what they’re playing, why and give an overview of the industry at large. An excellent supplement to any video game fan’s diet. [subscribe]

60 Second Science

Scientific American brings you Science news in 60 seconds, no more, no less. Great to watch in a bundle. [subscribe]

Diggnation

Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht are the hosts of the popular Diggnation Podcast. They talks about life, booze and Digg — culling news from that week’s front page. Diggnation also comes in video form and is brought to you by Revision 3. [subscribe]

Web 2.0 Show

Josh Owens and Adam Stacoviak’s podcast focuses on interviews with entrepreneurs and developers. They are looking always on the look out for cool, new projects so it’s a great place to find applications that might have slipped under the radar. [subscribe]

Amateur Traveler

Amateur Traveler is a travel advice podcast hosted by Chris Christensen. On each hour-long episode, he speaks to travelers, journalists and other wayfarers to help prepare you to visit far flung destinations. A great podcast for the travel enthusiast. [subscribe]

The Economist

If you are looking for some “real news” to round out your day, The Economist has put together a great series of shows. Unlike most of the other podcasts on this list, you will get a good mix of world news, politics and technology. It’s a great way to make up for all that TV you aren’t watching. [subscribe]

This American Life

The best way to explain This American Life is to let them do it,

“. . .So usually we just say what we’re not. We’re not a news show or a talk show or a call-in show. We’re not really formatted like other radio shows at all. Instead, we do these stories that are like movies for radio. There are people in dramatic situations. Things happen to them. There are funny moments and emotional moments and—hopefully—moments where the people in the story say interesting, surprising things about it all. It has to be surprising. It has to be fun.” [subscribe]
