Gas prices are going down but there are still substantial environmental concerns that are turning more and more people towards Hybrid and Electrical vehicles. A group of students at the Ecole de technologie superieure in Montreal are taking this one step further by presenting a car at the International Eureka Technology and Science festival that is powered entirely by solar panels.

Called the Eclipse VI, this car can travel a staggering 1864 miles at nearly 75 miles per hour, but before you ask about when these will be ending up a used car lot near you, understand that the solar panels alone cost about $700,000.

The Eclipse participated in this year’s North American Solar Challenge alongside 24 other solar powered racers. With solar cells becoming more and more efficient and the prices of the underlying technology going down, the future for these types of vehicles looks bright. For now, it’s interesting to see researches and engineers push the boundaries of what the technology is capable of.
