Language is still one of the biggest barriers on the web. Products like Mozilla’s new Ubiquity framework tackle the problem client side — giving you an elegant way to translate the page you are currently reading but it still misses an important component — how do you actually communicate with non-english speakers?

MeGlobe is one solution, providing an instant messaging client that translates conversations for you in near real time.

MeGlobe™ was built to diminish language barriers from online communication. Our free web client lets you type in your own language, but sends a translated version, in near real time, specific to the native tongue of whomever you are chatting with. Have not come across Meglobe before though there a few different services such as this one. Have just added the google translate function to my igoogle. it seems to be pretty good, although not instant.
