While not specifically designed for hunting down old relatives, Footnote is a repository of millions of documents from as far back as the Revolutionary War. You can search by person, place or event and look at the original documents in image form (for a price).

The number of documents that they have is absolutely stunning and the sheer usefulness of being able to comb through them all makes the $70 annual fee seem like pocket change. While this isn’t a tool for everyone, if you have a peek at your family tree this is a great tool to start.
