I’m always amazed by how extraordinarily complex problems can occasionally respond to incredibly simple solutions. Cleaning water with the amazing powers of the Sun.

In 2002, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1.1 billion people didn’t have access to clean water sources — that’s a whopping 17 percent of the global population. But with an international goal set by the United Nations to improve worldwide water quality by 2015, some programs are getting creative with ways to get clean water to people in the easiest way possible.

Enter the most simple purification system imaginable: SODIS, or solar water disinfection. The initiative of the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Sciences and Technology is about as simple as sun tea (minus the tea). Simply strip empty plastic water bottles of their labels and fill them with water from a puddle or river. Place the bottles on a sheet of metal in the full sun. After 6 hours soaking up the intense UV rays, you have clean water free from parasites, bacteria and viruses.
