As it turns out, more people have turned to broadband than you might have imagined — at least in the United States. The Leichtman Research group recently conducted a survey and found that about 53% of U.S. households have broadband, and of all the people who use the internet in the United States about 72% of them are broadband subscribers.

This is up from 62% last year. The sample being studied consists of approximately 1,600 randomly selected families throughout the U.S. some additional findings from the study were

  • 68% of all households with annual incomes over $50,000 now get broadband – compared to 59% last year
  • 39% of all households with annual incomes under $50,000 get broadband – compared to 27% last year
  • While 81% of all US households have at least one computer, only 56% of those with annual household incomes under $30,000 have a computer at home
  • Just 45% of households with annual incomes below $30,000 subscribe to an Internet service at home – compared to 92% of households with annual incomes above $75,000
  • Overall, 7% of all Internet subscribers say that broadband is not available in their area

Whether you are streaming internet radio, watching YouTube videos or participating in your favorite social network — this is great news. The more people who have consistent access to high speed internet technology, the stronger all web based applications will become and the more rich media will be able to be pushed our way.

It’s wonderful for slick new technologies to be developed, but if your average person can barely load a picture without their computers seizing it’s of no practical value. Lets hope that this trend continues, it’s just another step towards creating a new web.
