Rubik Cube

When I put this list together I asked myself what I wish I had been told about startups a year ago. Hopefully this list will give you a clearer picture on some pitfalls to avoid in starting a web venture.

1. Bad communication is the death of small companies. Get development and marketing on the same page as soon as you can.

2. You make your product, your community designs it. Don’t get so caught up in your idea that you build a product your users don’t understand.

3. You’re not important. You are not some creative genius that discovered the mysteries of the Universe. Keep yourself in perspective and learn to take advice.

4. Talk to everyone. The more narrowly you focus on throne room, the more unlikely it will be that you’ll see the barbarians knocking at your door. Get out there and look around.

5. Understand your message. Learn to communicate your idea in bullet points. If you can’t, then clarify your vision until you can.

6. You never need more money than you have. You can make due with very little operating capital and still do well in a web company. Once you get the “few bucks” you need to open the doors, more capital and lazier strategies become pretty closely linked.

7. Adapt. Learn to adapt to changing conditions. You can count on the wind changing directions, you need to move the sails accordingly.

8. Learn to trust your team. Learn to trust the agencies that you hire. Learn to trust the people who work under you. If you can’t trust those who you payroll, you probably shouldn’t be signing their checks.
