If you were looking for a way to give back to society, might I suggest putting a laptop in the hands of a child?
Today, the One Laptop Per Child initiative is launching their XO unit with a sale. For about $400 you can purchase not one but two of these rugged but admittedly ugly laptops. The first one you can keep for yourself and the second is sent to a child in another country. If you needed something else to sweeten the pot, T-Mobile is pitching in by giving anyone who buys one of these units and years worth of free HotSpot access.
I want to wish Nicholas (founder of the OLPC initiative) the best of luck in this effort. Giving children in underdeveloped countries the tools to bridge the digital divide will go a long way towards helping them build up their countries infrastructure in the future. Lets all hope the program is successful.
