Talking about the invites, I'm the types of person that getting rejected more than I can remember than anyone else...lol

Thus, I have an awful feeling about the "You Are Invited" sentence...

On web 2.0 it's all about numbers, so just like the JFK/ Nixon election, dead people count too. If it was possible for some websites to have the dead click away, they would be gazillionaires.

And that classic line from Groucho Marx "I sent the club a wire stating, "PLEASE ACCEPT MY RESIGNATION. I DON'T WANT TO BELONG TO ANY CLUB THAT WILL ACCEPT PEOPLE LIKE ME AS A MEMBER".

HI Ophelia, I especially loved that final para. Your post reeks of boredom & stalenes with (a lot) of the whole internet thing. Sure there are loads of worthy sites out there, but with the excitement of web 2.0 we've overdone it. And most new sites are clones with minor variations. Fact is that we have elevated all this way out of its true importance - so there's some cool new site out every other week - what difference to anything does it really make ?
Just a super highway of ultimately mind numbing new sites & their discarded predecessors.

True. It's dressing up the same cow with different outfits, but you are getting the same milk.

As you break down the "differences" between sites, you further dilute the message and decrease the size of your audience.

ie:
plain milk - lots of people
chocolate milk - kids and some adults
strawberry milk - weird kids and some weird adults
mocha choco milk - buying group getting smaller
strawberry choco frappe milk - minimal

and so on.

The only real invite only site that I'm still using is Gmail. Nothing else is quite as useful.

"Invites" goes back to the elementary school days of "How Many Valentines Did You Get?"
It's not about quality or if its useful, but about quantity.

You're lucky, though I am starting to only accept invitations to things I think I might actually use more than once.

Ah yes -- the endless appeal of leaving our cyber dna behind somewhere.....don't forget that first day you try to type in all the variations of your friends (past and present) names to see if anyone else you know is there.

I basically camp on tribe because I'm tired of teens and twenty somethings and tribe is more intelligent (well - I find tribers to be more intelligent, articulate, and interactive) and age appropriate for me. But I also have MySpace, LiveJournal, Blogger, my blog, oh, and my alma mater just set up a social networking site that's ugly but intriguing, then there's Facebook, which is way too intrusive. ACK!

You have to lay borders down after a while. I actually have to go back into my Digg and click off some people who love to email me about 15 times a day to Digg something. I will Digg, but after a while, it's really just not worth my time.

Haha! I sign up for stuff all the time. I have a spreadsheet with over 100 logins and I barely use 2% of the sites on a daily basis. And as of right now, anybody have any invites?

A spreadsheet of your logins and stuff, really?!?!?!? Gosh! I'm impressed. Wow. I would not think to do that. I just get frustrated and have them resend everything when I forget.

Yup! All placed online in google docs.... and I go back to it every time!

Ha! if there was a physical dump of all the SN sites, it would be huge.
Although I am grateful for the ones I use daily, because I have met the most amazing people, that I would not have if I didn't use those "invites".

you nailed it. and from the back side, start-up #2.5 is right now in a design meeting, deciding on the color scheme for its new and completely different same thing, that will be releasing shortly, while contemplating sending out some alpha invites and thinking about starting a marketing campaign on twitmore.

Milk is milk. And if you label it "Organic" or "Extra Good for You", it's just milk in a different container. The cow is the same cow. Same with new Social networking sites. I can't ask anymore friends to join me on new sites, they already have me on the "no way" list.

I don't even know where to begin. I love my social media outlets, but I don't know how many more I can stomach. I recently joined FriendFeed, but the UI is ugly and I can't figure out how to use it. BriteKite? I don't want people knowing where I am ALL THE TIME. The dinosaur in me still has a myspace account, though I rarely use it, and I just signed up with Facebook (which I love). But for the record, I just whore myself out so people will read my blog. ;)

I know your pain. I get invites at least 3 times a week, and it's just versions of other versions, just a different facade. Same store, different Sign.

And by the way I love your writing.
