this is a really touching note on how communities rally in a time of need and a salient point made regarding how social media helps to connect. the www has, in the developed world anyway, mitigated borders increasing connections across and even within geographic communities, one can only hope it leads to better communities.

Not only that but like you said, it makes it really easy for people across the world to feel the impact of events. You can't count on the news to report things broadly, but SM gives you the tools to seek it out.

Yes the value of social media is the enabling communication tools, when a disaster happens, it gets reported first on Twitter.
Here in UK we're having a so-so summer - what summer ? and your feature reminds people to stop moaning !!

Like I told you when we talked about this post, I love articles like this -- not because they show the "power of citizen journalism" or anything so trite, but because they give me some hope that there is a real point to wheel that we are all collectively spinning.

You're absolutely right, Social Media didn't enable you and Dan to do all of those things that you did, but it did enable something almost as important -- catharsis. It gave you a vehicle to help cope with sounds like a horrendous travesty. If nothing else, there is value in that.

Thanks for writing this Greg, it's an amazing example of what should really be driving all of this technology.
